Do Term Papers Count As Research Or As Do It Yourself Projects?While I am in the midst of preparing my dissertation for a first-year honors thesis, my advisor has suggested that I write some do term papers. This is not exactly what I had in mind when I signed up for this course, but the process of writing these papers has become more complex than I had anticipated. I have also found that while my supervisor has been supportive of my desire to study abroad for a couple of semesters, my questions about doing do term papers have remained unanswered.First of all, do term papers are part of my research work, and thus must be done for my academic program. However, the dissertation committee I took the class with does not feel that this is an appropriate topic for my thesis. So, I am left to choose between the two options - do term papers or research my own project.I know what my advisor would want me to do. She wants me to write an introduction to my course and to participate in 'faculty r esearch'. She does not wish me to spend a year doing something that is not my vocation, but instead wants me to do research. Thus, she tells me that I should write a research paper.The problem is that I don't want to do research for my dissertation, nor do I think it is appropriate for my honors thesis. I would much rather contribute to my program in any other way and contribute by writing papers that will serve as my teaching assistantships. In other words, I am not writing to research my own program.Research is not what I should be doing, and it is certainly not necessary. I am writing this article for the benefit of my graduate students, and they are only now beginning to realize what I have known for a long time. They might ask me what I mean by research.My research is anything that provides an assessment of my undergraduate degree, that does not have much to do with my field of study, and that is unrelated to the course objectives I have set for myself. If you ask me how I am p rogressing, and I tell you that I am researching my PhD dissertation, then it is probably not the best approach.So, in the end, my advisor prefers that I write research papers, but my supervisor prefers that I do do term papers. Which one do I choose? Only she knows the answer to that question. The only person who can help her is me.
